The Meidlands: Early Modern Fantasy Folk Horror

The Meidlands is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the 17th century in fantasy world based on real world history — a world of pike and shot, folk magic, and religious conspiracy, where the veil between reality and something older grows dangerously thin.

Built on an innovative D6 pool system with twelve distinct player classes, four complete magic systems, and over 1,000 spells, The Meidlands provides a richly detailed world with mechanics designed around player choice rather than character optimization.

This is not a dungeon crawl. It is an investigation. A survival. A reckoning.

A World Built From History.

The Meidlands is an Early Modern fantasy setting drawing on 17th century Britain, Ireland and beyond, folk tradition, and genuine historical research. Not medieval. Not Tolkien. Something older, stranger, and closer to real.

Dice That Give You Choices.

The Meidlands uses scalable D6 pools where every roll is a decision. Bonuses don’t just add numbers — they let you reroll, fish for critical hits, or convert to extra dice. Simple to learn. Deep to master.

Four Complete Magic Systems. One World.

Academic wizardry. Folk witchcraft. Bardic chantry magic. Divine rites and wonders. Over 1,000 spells across four completely distinct magical traditions — each with its own philosophy, mechanics, and aesthetic.

Make Things. Dangerous Things.

Full alchemy, enchanting, and folk crafting systems. Simple potions brewed in a kitchen. Complex transmutations requiring months of careful work. The tools of your trade are as interesting as your spells.

Strategic, Yet Brutal.

The Meidlands features a simple to run, but strategically deep combat system, building risk-reward into the action economy. Characters have four actions per round, but not reserving some for the enemy’s turn could spell a quick demise.

The Gods Are Returning. Not All Of Them Are Welcome.

The Maker sleeps. The veil between worlds is thinning. Ancient powers are pressing through — some hostile, some ambiguous, some that remember humanity fondly. None of them are safe.

Something Is Wrong In The Village.

Chimaerae form where reality corrupts. Cults operate in the shadows. Folk creatures older than the Church still demand respect. The Meidlands is a complete horror-fantasy setting — cult thriller, monster hunt, fairy tale gone wrong, and cosmic dread, sometimes in the same evening.

Old School Meets New School. Wrapped Up in Period Dress.

The Meidlands stems from an Old School tradition, but embraces a new approach to player agency driven mechanics. The traditional class-based, 6 ability score framing is a starting point for something engaging and refreshing to play. And it looks damn cool.
